BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Basil I. Hirschowitz, M.D., of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), whose invention opened the door to the era of flexible endoscopy, was presented with the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy’s (ASGE) Special Recognition Award on May 21 in Los Angeles.
Hirschowitz invented an improved optical glass fiber and developed the flexible endoscope, which modernized gastroenterologic diagnostic treatment techniques. His career has spanned six decades and continues today at UAB, where he was recruited in 1959 to found the Division of Gastroenterology. He was director of the division for 28 years as professor both of medicine and of physiology and biophysics. He was named professor emeritus in 1996.
His major research interests involve the pathophysiology of peptic acid diseases, particularly Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. One of his research projects in that area is now entering its 16th year.
