BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jim Raper, D.S.N., C.R.N.P., J.D., of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has been named a fellow by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners for his commitment to the care of patients, especially those infected with HIV. He also received the AANP’s Alabama Nurse Practitioner 2007 State Award for Excellence.

Raper is director of the 1917 HIV/AIDS Outpatient and Infectious Disease Clinics at UAB. He is the first nurse practitioner in Alabama to win the national honor.

“I am humbled by the AANP’s recognitions of my accomplishments as a nurse practitioner to the nursing profession,” Raper said. “I have been afforded a tremendous opportunity to contribute both locally and nationally to the care of HIV-infected patients through my appointments in both the schools of Nursing and Medicine at UAB.”

As part of the responsibilities that come with the Fellows of the AANP position Raper will spend time helping nursing scholars and educators nationwide plan and deliver leadership and mentorship programs for nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner students.

With more than 22,700 individual members and 135 group members from all specialties, AANP represents 95,000 nurse practitioners around the nation. The Fellows of the AANP program was established in 2000 to recognize select practitioners who contribute to the academy’s mission through clinical practice, research, education or policy. Raper is now one of the 133 distinguished Fellows. He is a graduate of the UAB School of Nursing.
