Rigney currently is the associate dean for the UAB School of Engineering. He will assume his new duties April 1.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — E. Douglas Rigney, Ph.D., P.E., associate dean of the UAB School of Engineering, has been named special assistant to the provost for the student information system project, announced acting Provost Eli Capilouto. Rigney currently is the associate dean for the UAB School of Engineering. He will assume his new duties April 1.

In this newly created position, Rigney oversee the day-to-day operations for all implementation phases of the student information systems project, including management of the team members working on the project, integration of business process within the project and development of subsequent training materials.

“Doug Rigney has been an asset to UAB for more than 25 years, first as a student and most recently as a member of our faculty responsible for overseeing academic and student affairs for the school of engineering,” said UAB Acting Provost Eli Capilouto. “His knowledge and understanding of UAB’s student information system and his vision for the university’s academic mission make him the perfect choice to lead this project.”

Rigney joined the faculty of the UAB School of Engineering in 1989 as an assistant professor of materials science and engineering and currently, in addition to his duties as associate dean, is an associate professor of biomedical engineering. Rigney earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering in 1980, a bachelor’s in materials engineering in 1985, a master’s in biomedical engineering in 1985 and a doctorate in biomedical engineering in 1989, all from UAB.

Rigney has won numerous awards from both academic and professional organizations, served as a consultant for a number of national companies and is a member of many prominent professional organizations including the American Society for Engineering Education, the Society for Biomaterials and ASM International.
