BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mariana Rodriguez, 20, of Irondale has won the first ever UAB Edmonds Family Scholarship.

The Edmonds Scholarship, created by UAB graduate Chris Edmonds, is a competitive award designed for undergraduate students enrolled in UAB’s School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The award honors students who demonstrate academic excellence and a sophisticated world view. The Edmonds scholarship is an annual award that provides winners with $2,000 a year and can be applied toward tuition and fees.

Edmonds established the scholarship to honor his mother, who earned degrees in education and in the social sciences at UAB.

Applicants for the scholarship must undergo a rigorous screening process. Candidates must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better after completing 24 credit hours. Each applicant is given a topic on which to write an essay on the spot. The SBS Committee on Teaching and Academic Affairs then selects the three best essays and interviews the three finalists before choosing a winner. UAB Assistant Professor Kent Kerley, Ph.D., in the Department of Justice Sciences, is chairman of the committee.

Rodriguez, a native of Venezuela, is one of 15 students who applied for the scholarship. She is a junior majoring in international studies and plans to pursue a career in diplomacy. A 2004 graduate of Shades Valley High School, Rodriguez also is a recipient of a UAB Carolyn and Charles W. Ireland International Student Scholarship. She has been listed on the UAB Presidential Honor Roll.

Rodriguez is president of the UAB International Studies Club and former secretary of the UAB French Club. She also is a mentor in the UAB International Mentoring Program. She is the daughter of Jose and Graciela Rodriguez of Irondale.
