Anthony B. Purcell has been named assistant vice president and chief of police at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Richard Margison, vice president for financial affairs and administration at UAB, made the announcement today. Purcell currently is the deputy chief of police and security at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He will assume his duties at UAB Oct. 9, 2006.

“Anthony brings a wealth of experience in a variety of settings that make him a perfect fit for UAB,” Margison said. “He has served as a chief of police at other universities, including the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, so he understands the issues that UAB faces being a campus in a bustling, large city.”

In addition to serving at Georgia Tech and UNC-Charlotte, Purcell was the chief of police and director of public safety at North Carolina Central University in Durham. Prior to joining NCCU, Purcell served nine years with the Durham County Sheriff’s Department. At Georgia Tech, Purcell was responsible for the patrol, special operations, criminal investigations and administrative services divisions. During his tenure, the university has seen a more than 50 percent decrease in campus crime.

Purcell earned his bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice from North Carolina Central University and his master’s degree in criminal justice from NCCU. He has served as an adjunct instructor in criminal justice at UNCC and NCCU. Additionally, he has presented nationally on such topics as “When Diversity and National Security Collide,” "Campus Policing Issues: Policing in an Age of Litigation,” and "Community-Oriented Policing and Problem Solving for Campus Law Enforcement Agencies.”
