BIRMINGHAM, AL — Medical students at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) will pay their respects to those who donated their bodies in 2004 for scientific study at the Anatomical Donor Program’s annual Service of Gratitude at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium (corner of 19th Street and 7th Avenue on the UAB campus). The service is hosted by members of the Class of 2008 of the School of Medicine.

“The donors are such an integral part of our medical education and serve, in effect, as our first ‘patients,’” said organizer James Robinson, a first-year medical student. “The Class of 2008 has prepared a program that we will hope will honor the memory of the donors and convey our extreme gratitude to the sacrifice that they and their families have made for the betterment of our medical education.”

More than 150 family members and relatives of the donors of 2004 are expected to attend the service, along with students and faculty of the School of Medicine.

The service will feature a candle-lighting ceremony, remarks from medical school students and staff and musical selections performed by members of the Class of 2008. A reception will follow the service.

The UAB Anatomical Donor Program receives about 100 cadavers each year for study at the medical school. For more information on the program, call (205) 934-4494.
