WHAT:

 

The new space will better accommodate the Counselor Education Program’s students who will use the lab to practice group counseling processes, individual counseling techniques, testing/assessment training and play therapy.

The new lab has nine counseling rooms and two seminar rooms for class instruction in play therapy and group counseling.

Later this year, the Counseling Education Program will use the facility to provide free counseling services to children and adults through referrals from local schools, crisis centers and mental health organizations. Advanced master’s degree students will provide the counseling services under the supervision of faculty and practicing counselors in the educational specialist degree program.

BACKGROUND:

 

  • The UAB Counselor Education Program is a master’s degree level program designed to train skilled counselors who are able to serve a culturally diverse community.

  • Students in the Counselor Education Program can pursue master’s degrees in community counseling, school counseling and rehabilitation counseling for the disabled.

  • Students are required to complete up to 600 hours of supervised field experience in a clinical or K-12 school setting.

  • The Counselor Education Program offers an educational specialist degree for working school and community counselors who have received the master’s degree.
