University of Florida Professor Roger B. Fillingim, Ph.D., has been selected to receive the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Psychology’s Distinguished Alumni Award for 2006. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Florida Professor Roger B. Fillingim, Ph.D., has been selected to receive the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Psychology’s Distinguished Alumni Award for 2006.

Fillingim, a professor of psychology, will be honored during a ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in UAB Campbell Hall, Room 327, 1300 University Blvd. During the event, he will present his lecture, “Individual Differences in Pain and Analgesia: Contributing Factors and Clinical Implications.” Call the UAB Department of Psychology at 205-934-3850 for more details.

Fillingim earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology at UAB in 1987 and 1990 respectively. In 1990, he became a clinical psychologist in the Pain Management Center at Memorial Regional Rehabilitation Center in Jacksonville, Fla. He later became a research assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill’s School of Dentistry in 1994. Two years later, in 1996, he was an assistant professor in the UAB Department of Psychology. In 2000, Fillingim began work as an associate professor at the University of Florida’s College of Dentistry Public Health Services and Research.

Fillingim’s research is focused on ethnic and gender differences in response to pain and sex-related genetic influences on pain and analgesia. His work is supported by several grants from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Fillingim also is director of Pain Psychology Service at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla., where he conducts psychological evaluations and treatment of veterans with chronic pain.

The UAB Department of Psychology’s Distinguished Alumni Award was created to recognize alumni of the department for their professional achievements, exceptional human qualities and contributions to the university and society.
