BIRMINGHAM, AL — Vaughn Randall of Birmingham is the winner of the Samuel B. Barker Memorial Outdoor Sculpture Competition, announced Brett Levine, director of the Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
Randall’s work “Rosette Bobbin” was selected as the winner from six finalists. All of the entries were maquettes, or small-scale models.
Randall’s cast iron sculpture interprets the historic stained glass window of UAB’s Spencer Honors House, which is near the site where the completed sculpture is to be installed, Levine said. Levine described “Rosette Bobbin” as “a work that has a strong conceptual relationship to its site and is artistically well finished and resolved.”
Work on the piece will begin at Birmingham’s historic Sloss Furnace. Randall is employed at Sloss Metal Arts and has a studio there.
Barker and his wife, Justine, were renowned patrons of the arts whose support created the Samuel B. Barker Outdoor Sculpture Competition at UAB. A panel of judges meets to select finalists and then meets again to select the winning entry. The winner receives $25,000 to complete and install the work on campus this year.
“I would like to think that the late Dr. Barker would feel his commitment to the ongoing collection of outdoor sculpture at UAB is being greatly enhanced by Mr. Randall’s work,” said Levine.
Levine said he hopes the work will be installed in October and November of this year. An illustrated catalogue outlining the 2005 competition and the winner, as well as all of the finalists, will accompany the sculpture.
