BIRMINGHAM, AL — Two UAB students have received top school honors for achievement based in part on national publication of their research. Muktar Aliyu, a graduate student in epidemiology, received the 2005 Academic Excellence Award, and Jeanine E. Sedjro, an undergraduate student in mathematics, received the 2005 Outstanding Achievement Award.

Both students are mentored by Hamisu Salihu, M.D., UAB professor of public health in the Department of Maternal Child Health. “These awards are a testament to the outstanding work of these students and to cross-disciplinary mentorships — translating knowledge learned in one discipline into meaningful research and practice in another discipline,” said Salihu.

Aliyu has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. Papers co-authored by Aliyu have appeared in journals such as the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, the American Journal of Perinatology and the Journal of Reproductive Medicine.

Sedjro published “Influence of Nativity on Neonatal Survival of Black Twins in the U.S.,” in Ethnicity and Disease. She recently had a second manuscript, “Teen Twin Pregnancies and Fetal Growth Inhibition Among Blacks and Whites,” accepted for publication in the American Journal of Perinatology. The paper is scheduled for publication this fall.
