The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures honored its outstanding students for 2005.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures honored its outstanding students for 2005.

Jeanne d’Arc G. Boohaker of Birmingham was named as the Outstanding Student of French. Boohaker graduated from UAB earlier this month. The other winners included Outstanding Student of Spanish Natalia S. Bentley, a senior from Fultondale; Outstanding Student of Italian Marissa F. Stevens, a senior from Leeds; Outstanding Student of German Sarah Ballard, a senior from Birmingham; Outstanding Student of Chinese Loria L. Walthall, a senior from Bessemer; and Outstanding Student of Japanese Clarence J. Coskrey, a senior from Birmingham.

James P. DeAndrade, a junior from Birmingham, received the 2005 Alliance Francaise Award from the Alliance Francaise, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting French language and culture. The award recognizes students who display outstanding achievement in French studies.

Several other UAB foreign language students received merit-based scholarships. DeAndrade, along with Katherine R. Heck of Homewood, who is a graduate student in the School of Education, and freshman Ashley Arrington of Greensboro, each received a 2005-2006 Alliance Francaise of Birmingham Scholarship. The one-year Alliance Francaise of Birmingham Scholarship is awarded annually to incoming or current students and is valued at $1,500.

Brittlyn M. Hall, a junior from Birmingham, received a 2005-2006 Spanish Study Abroad Scholarship to Spain. The scholarship is valued at $750.

Luke McKay, a junior from Hoover, received the Don Quijote [cq] Study Abroad Scholarship sponsored by Don Quijote In Country Spanish Language Courses, which is Spain’s largest provider of in-country Spanish courses. The scholarship includes a two-week intensive Spanish course in Spain or Mexico and accommodations. Students also attend events aimed at helping them integrate into local life and explore local culture.

Freshman Hal Hardy of Birmingham received a 2005 Foreign Language Advisory Committee Spanish Scholarship. The scholarship, valued at $500, is awarded to a deserving student majoring in Spanish.

Freshman Allison R. McCurley of Troy received the Dr. Avie Overbach Cohen Spanish & Pre-Medicine Scholarship. The scholarship, valued at $500, is awarded to a deserving Spanish and pre-medicine student and is a gift to the department from Overbach’s family.

Sophomore Danny R. Richardson of Birmingham received the Dr. Will David Spanish Scholarship. The scholarship, valued at $750, is given to a student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and is a gift from Jacqui David to the department.
