Alabama imports much of the blood needed in area hospitals for medical procedures. Much of that imported blood comes from Oklahoma and other Midwest states. The blood drive gives the UAB and greater Birmingham communities a chance to reduce the need for Alabama to rely on other states for blood. UAB and the Red Cross have launched an ambitious partnership to make UAB self-sufficient in blood needs. The blood initiative focuses on increasing donation and better managing blood resources at all UAB-affiliated hospitals. UAB is one of the largest blood users in the country.
