Birmingham (UAB) biomedical engineering student from Hazel Green, recently received one of 13 national American Physiological Society (APS) 2005 Undergraduate Research Fellowships.

Duke will receive a $3,000 stipend to cover expenses during the 10-week fellowship. She will spend the summer in a laboratory with UAB Associate Professor Michael McCracken, D.D.S., and Dale J. Benos, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. She also will receive an additional $1,000 to present her research at the Experimental Biology 2006 meeting.

The American Physiological Society presented $52,000 in fellowships to its 2005 Undergraduate Research Fellows. The program, now in its sixth year, is sponsored by the APS Career Opportunities in Physiology Committee and is funded by the APS Council and a grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.
