BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB's (University of Alabama at Birmingham) Center for Aging has issued a call for nominations for two annual community awards, the Robert P. Bynum Award and the New Horizons Award. The awards recognize individuals or organizations for their leadership efforts on behalf of older adults.
The Robert P. Bynum Award recognizes older adults, age 75 or older at the time of the award, who remain actively engaged in activities that enhance the health or well-being of other older adults. Awardees are expected to have a track record of leadership and service on behalf of older adults that is illustrated by the life and work of Robert P. Bynum, for whom the award is named.
The New Horizons Award is given to recognize a not-for-profit organization that provides programs or activities that enhance the health or well-being of retired persons in Alabama. The selected organizations will have a track record of service on behalf of older adults illustrated by the activities of New Horizons at UAB , an older adult community of learners.
Nominations must be submitted by June 8, and can be sent to the Director of the UAB Center for Aging, CH19 201, 1530 3rd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35294-2041 or by email to cfa@aging.uab.edu. When making a nomination, provide the name, birth date, mailing address, phone number, and email for the potential awardee, along with no more than a one-page, single-spaced description of the nominee's past, current and ongoing activities that would merit selection for the award.
Robert P. Bynum has worked with the UAB Center for Aging as an employee, consultant and volunteer.
He provided leadership for UAB Elderhostel programs for many years and he continues to conduct pre-retirement seminars for the City of Birmingham and several large corporations. He serves on the Center for Aging Community Advisory Committee. Previous award winners are Robert P. Bynum in 2005, Colonel Stone Johnson in 2006 and Hyman M. ‘Herc' Levine, Jr. in 2007.
New Horizons at UAB is a membership group of men and women of retirement age who remain active through learning and fellowship. Launched in 1989, it is sponsored by the Center for Aging and the Associate Provost for Academic Programs and Policy as a self-governing and member-directed program. Previous award winners are New Horizons in 2005, Shepherd's Center Southside and Alabama Retired State Employee's Association in 2006 and the JOY Club at the Levite Jewish Community Center in 2007.
