Wake Forest University Associate Professor Dwayne W. Godwin, Ph.D., has been selected to receive the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Psychology’s Distinguished Alumni Award

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Wake Forest University Associate Professor Dwayne W. Godwin, Ph.D., has been selected to receive the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Psychology’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Godwin, a professor of neurobiology and anatomy, will be honored during a ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 19, in UAB Campbell Hall, Room 327, 1300 University Boulevard. During the event, he will present his lecture “Dynamics of Cortical Feedback in Early Vision.” Call the Department of Psychology at (205) 934-3850 for more details.

Godwin earned his doctoral degree through the UAB behavioral neuroscience program in 1992. His academic career began in 1994 when he was appointed research assistant professor at State University of New York at Stony Brook. He was promoted to associate professor in 2002.

Godwin’s research is focused on how the nervous system exerts early control of its own sensory input in different behavioral states. His research includes projects in visual neurophysiology, epilepsy, sleep and alcohol abuse and is funded by the National Eye Institute and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. He is founding director of the Wake Forest University Ph.D./MBA program, the first program combining a Ph.D., in the sciences with a masters of business administration.

The UAB Department of Psychology’s Distinguished Alumni Award was created to recognize alumni of the department for their professional achievements, exceptional human qualities and contributions to the university and society.
