BIRMINGHAM, AL — Taher El Gammal, M.D., was named Professor Emeritus in the Department of Radiology of the UAB School of Medicine by action of the UA System Board of Trustees today.

El Gammal joined the faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1988 and served as chief of neuroradiology much of that period. The Board noted his distinguished career at UAB and other major universities. He was regarded as a role model for radiology residents and junior faculty for his neuroradiology interpretation and procedural skills.

El Gammal received degrees from Cairo (Egypt) University, served a fellowship at Cairo and at the London (England) National Hospitals of Nervous Diseases, and another postgraduate fellowship at the University of Virginia Hospital. He later served on the faculty of Virginia and the Medical College of Georgia before coming to Birmingham.

He holds membership in a number of professional organizations, serving as a moderator at the International Symposium of Neuroradiologicum and annual meetings of the American Society of Neuroradiology. For 12 years was on the editorial board of the American Journal of Neuroradiology.
