WHAT:

Leading marine researchers from UAB are among the first U.S. teams diving into the icy Antarctic waters as the International Polar Year begins.

WHY:

The team is in familiar waters as they explore undersea forests to collect macroalgae, sponges and more. As a side benefit of their quest to understand predator-prey dynamics of Antarctica’s marine communities, the team has discovered several compounds with potential uses against cancer.

WHO:

UAB biologists Charles Amsler, Ph.D., and James McClintock, Ph.D., along with chemist Bill Baker, Ph.D., from the University of South Florida are on a February -May 2007 research trip to Antarctica’s Palmer Station. The three are one of the premier teams in Antarctic biology research.
