Four area high school students took top prizes at the 2007 Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair, sponsored by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Center for Community OutReach Development (CORD). The event was held March 10 at the UAB Campus Recreation Center.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Four area high school students took top prizes at the 2007 Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair, sponsored by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Center for Community OutReach Development (CORD). The event was held March 10 at the UAB Campus Recreation Center.

More than 200 middle and high school students competed in the Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Children in grades 6-8 competed in the Junior Division. High school students competed in the Senior Division. The science fair featured eight categories: biology; chemistry; engineering, math and computer science; environmental and earth sciences; medicine and health sciences; physical sciences; behavioral and social sciences; and energy and transportation.

Four of the eight Senior Division first place winners were selected as the science fair’s top overall winners and will now go on to compete in the INTEL International Fair May 13-19 in Albuquerque, N.M. The top four overall Senior Division winners are:

Lydia McCormick, (35210), freshman, Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School, “The Effect of Cahaba River Sediment on Algae Growth”

Christopher T. Phare, (35242), senior, Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School, “MEMS Accelerometer Pointing Device”

James E.W. Lecroy, Pleasant Grove, freshman, Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School, “Through the Fire and Flames: The Effect of Selected Flame-Retardants on Specific Fabrics”

Thirty-two contestants at the Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair were selected to compete at the Alabama Science and Engineering Fair to be held April 5-7 at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
