WHAT:

Birmingham blood suppliers report a shortage of blood platelets due to Hurricane Katrina. The hurricane has created both an increased need for blood products and has interfered with normal blood collection. UAB Hospital encourages the public to donate blood during this recovery period. Platelets are in particular short supply. The upcoming Labor Day weekend is compounding the problem, as blood shortages are typically more acute during holiday periods.
