University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) faculty and students were honored with awards and scholarships at the Birmingham Advertising Federation ADDY awards Feb. 17 at B&A Warehouse. Posted on February 23, 2007 at 2:50 p.m.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) faculty and students were honored with awards and scholarships at the Birmingham Advertising Federation ADDY awards Feb. 17 at B&A Warehouse.

UAB Associate Professor Erin Wright, M.F.A., won two gold and two silver ADDY awards and was named Designer of the Year for his poster for Identity 2006, an exhibition in the Czech Republic, and for his posters promoting the John Waters and Laurie Anderson lectures at UAB. UAB Assistant Professor Audra Buck, M.F.A., won a gold ADDY for her Sticks + Stones catalog, which accompanied a student exhibit and class project that focused on labeling and stereotyping in relation to graphic design.

UAB students took home all $6,000 in scholarship prizes, sweeping that area of the competition. Senior art major Brandon Dawson of Birmingham (35027), son of Marva and Bill Dawson, won a student gold ADDY for his Sticks + Stones self-portrait, with a prize of $1,250, and was named Student Best of Show and awarded $1,500. Senior art major Allison Kizer of Birmingham, daughter of Kaye and Curtis Hill, was awarded the student silver ADDY for her entry in the sales promotion packaging category, with a prize of $1,000.

Senior art major Brian Curtin of Huntsville, son of Nancy Shue and Michael Curtin, was awarded a gold ADDY for a group entry, “About Face - A Typographer’s Survival Guide 2 & 3,” with art major Haley Jimmerson and recent graduate Meagan Peace of Mobile, daughter of Miriam and Terrance Washington. The three students will share $1,250 in scholarship money. Senior art major Adam Purdy of Monticello, Ind., son of Patricia J. Purdy, recent UAB graduate Elizabeth Douglas of Gardendale, daughter of Gladys and Ronald Douglas, and Joshua Roe were awarded the silver ADDY for a group entry, “Typeface Anatomy.” The three students will share the $1,000 scholarship prize.
