BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Robert J. Collins, Ph.D., a University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) associate professor of English, has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize for his poem “Origen’s Angels: The Fall,” which was published in the spring 2006 issue of Connecticut Review.

The Pushcart Prize – Best of the Small Presses, published annually since 1976, is one of the top literary awards in the United States. The annual collection has featured the works of many distinguished writers, poets and essayists such as John Irving, Susan Minot, Philip Levine, Jayne Anne Phillips and many more. Small magazine and book press editors nominate works from their publications. The editors for the Connecticut Review nominated Collins for the award.

“Origen’s Angels: The Fall” is part of a book-length volume of poetry that Collins recently completed titled “All Things Visible.” The phrase, said Collins, is taken from the Apostles’ Creed, “I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth and of all things visible and invisible.” Origen, one of the fathers of the early church, believed that the angels fell because they grew weary of adoring God, Collins said.

Collins is founder and editor of the Birmingham Poetry Review. His books include “The Inventor Poems” (1981), “The Glass Blower” (1997), “Lives We Have Chosen” (1998), “Greatest Hits” (2001) and “Occasions of Sin” (2005).

Collins earned his doctorate in English from Ohio State University in 1978. He joined the UAB English Department in 1980. Collins directs the Creative Writing Program. The program offers workshops in fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. Workshops are available for beginning and advanced undergraduates.
