His lecture is titled “Finding Solutions to the Black Male Crisis in Higher Education.” Harper will answer questions from the audience. Harper is an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania specializing in race and gender in higher education and the effects of college environments on student behaviors and outcomes. The event is sponsored by the UAB Division of Student Affairs and the UAB Blazer Male Excellence Network.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will host a town hall meeting featuring author Shaun R. Harper on Thursday, March 20 at 2 p.m. at the UAB Hill University Center, located on 1400 University Blvd. His lecture is titled "Finding Solutions to the Black Male Crisis in Higher Education." Harper will answer questions from the audience. Harper is an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania specializing in race and gender in higher education and the effects of college environments on student behaviors and outcomes. The event is sponsored by the UAB Division of Student Affairs and the UAB Blazer Male Excellence Network.

Harper is renowned for his research on the achievement of black male students on college campuses. In September 2007 he was featured on the cover of Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine for his National Black Male College Achievement Study, the largest-ever empirical research project on black male undergraduates. His books and monographs include "Student Engagement in Higher Education" (2008), "Responding to the Realities of Race on Campus" (2007) and "Creative Inclusive Campus Environments for Cross-Cultural Learning and Student Engagement (2007).
