BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -  Pratik Talati, a sophomore majoring in mathematics and chemistry from Pelham, has been awarded a scholarship to attend the prestigious Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD)-RISE summer internship program at Max-Planck-Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, Germany, where he will analyze novel stress-regulated genes in mice.

The DAAD-RISE internship is funded by the DAAD German Academic Exchange Program and is a fully funded six- to 12-week internship in Germany, including accommodation and stipend. Through DAAD-RISE, U.S. students in science and engineering are placed in top research labs in order to get a glimpse of advanced research work while gaining desirable practical experience in their field.  The goal of the project on which Talati will be working is to identify the function of these new genes and to offer possible applications in the treatment of stress-related disorders in humans. At UAB, he has been working on a research project in biochemistry.

RISE, Research Internships in Science and Engineering, gives students in the fields of biology, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering and physics the chance to spend a summer working with German doctoral students on serious research projects. The doctoral students help integrate the undergraduate directly into the lab work and serve as personal and professional mentors.

Talati also participates in the University Honors, Chemistry Scholars and Math Fast Track programs and is pursuing a double minor in Spanish and Biology. He is the son of Ashvin and Alka Talati.
