The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center recently honored the American Cast Iron Pipe Company (ACIPCO) for 30 consecutive years of donor support.
The longtime annual money gift comes from ACIPCO employees to support cancer research and care services. To date, the company's donations have climbed to just below $500,000.
At an awards luncheon March 20th marking company's 30th check presentation, Cancer Center Director Edward Partridge, M.D., said, "This is the kind of community support we've always depended on and will continue to need as we move forward."
Although the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center receives millions of dollars in the form of research grants, private-sector support on a continuous basis is vital for consistent growth and development, Partridge said.
Corporate donations, along with those made by civic clubs, philanthropic organizations, individuals and community groups allow the Cancer Center to continue cutting-edge research, recruit outstanding new faculty and upgrade its equipment year after year.
During ACIPCO's three decades of annual support, the money is usually earmarked for a specific purpose or project. This year's ACIPCO donation will support the recruitment of a behavioralist to study the breast cancer screening habits and views of Medicare enrollees.
Headquartered in Birmingham, ACIPCO is one of the largest manufacturers of ductile iron pipe, fire hydrants and valves for the waterworks industry as well as steel pipe for oil and natural gas pipelines.
