The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Mathematics hosted math teams from high schools across Alabama in the “UAB Mathematics Talent Search” competition from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, March 8.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Mathematics hosted math teams from high schools across Alabama in the “UAB Mathematics Talent Search” competition from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, March 8.

The 20 participating schools entered 10th and 11th grade students to take a two-hour, 10-question written test made up of algebra and geometry questions that emphasized reasoning ability. More than 150 students competed in the contest.

There were eight individual prizes and six school trophies awarded. Awards were given to four individuals in each grade with the highest scores. School awards were presented to the three schools with the highest composite scores of three students in each grade. Winners are:

10th Grade Individual

1st place: Ivy Wu, Vestavia Hills High School
2nd place: Jim Watson, Vestavia Hills High School
3rd place: Fan Young, Alabama School of Fine Arts
4th place: Chris Louis, Vestavia Hills High School

10th Grade School

1st place: Vestavia Hills High School
2nd place: Homewood High School
3rd place: Alabama School of Fine Arts

11th Grade Individual

1st place: Kyle Fritz, Hoover High School
2nd place(tie): Misha Kotov, Vestavia Hills High School
2nd place(tie): Jordan Myers Hoover High School
4th place: Yang Su, Hoover High School

11th Grade School Winners

2nd place: Vestavia Hills High School
3rd place(tie): Cold Springs High School
3rd place(tie): Homewood High School

In addition to the competition, students had lunch on-site and attended the UAB vs. Memphis basketball game at 1 p.m.
