BIRMINGHAM, AL — Eight students were honored for their works of art during the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) 27th Juried Student Annual exhibition. The exhibition highlights the works of students enrolled in the UAB Department of Art and Art History.

Visiting artist Mirko Ilic, juror for the 27th Juried Student Annual exhibition, selected more than 60 works for the show. Ilic then chose eight works and presented the artists with awards of distinction during his April visit.

The students who received awards of distinction are Kristin Smith, Alan Skees, William Keith, Reed Barrow, Janice Weeks, Jacqueline Homm, Arlene Weinsier and Hannah Freer. Each student was awarded a $50 gift certificate from Forstall Art Supply or Alabama Art Supply.

UAB purchased two works from the student show for its permanent collection: a photograph by Freer and a suite of two paintings by Terry Strickland, winner of the inaugural Takahashi Prize for Painting. The prize, which honors the late Dr. Ellen Takahashi, was awarded by her husband Dr. Clyde Oyster and her family.
