WHAT:

The first surgical procedure in the new University Hospital was performed today (November 8) as UAB continues to bring the $275 million building online during the month of November. The first surgery, a coronary artery bypass, began at 6:25 a.m.

WHO:

Dr. Albert Pacifico, director of the division of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, led the 13-person surgical team, which included nurses, perfusionists, anesthetists and surgeons. The patient, a 66-year-old male from Gardendale, Alabama, is recovering in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit in serious condition. A total of five surgeries were performed today in the new building.

BACKGROUND:

The new University Hospital has 37 state-of-the-art operating rooms, each about 25 percent larger than the facilities they replace. Each suite has four flat-screen monitors to allow surgeons to view surgical images more readily. Surgical staff also are able to access laboratory or biopsy results and images from radiology at the touch of a button.

In addition to the surgical suites, the 885,000-square-foot facility houses 94 intensive care beds, 96 private acute patient rooms and a 38,000-square-foot emergency department that is roughly the size of a football field. The emergency department houses 45 treatment rooms, special decontamination areas, high-speed CT scanners and three large trauma procedure rooms. The transition to the new hospital will continue over the next several weeks, as the emergency department, intensive care units and other patient care areas are phased in. Construction began on the new University Hospital in July 2000.
