University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) doctoral student Karen Werner, 24, of Birmingham, will receive the Vivian Drenckhahn Student Scholarship Award from the Society of Public Health Education (SOPHE).

BIRMINGHAM, AL — University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) doctoral student Karen Werner, 24, of Birmingham, will receive the Vivian Drenckhahn Student Scholarship Award from the Society of Public Health Education (SOPHE).

The national award is presented to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to addressing the public’s health through a career in health education. The $1,500 scholarship award will be presented to Werner at the SOPHE annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on November 6.

Werner is a student in the Department of Human Studies’ health education program, which is housed in the School of Education. Following graduation, Werner plans to pursue an academic career. She is a native of Long Island, New York.
