The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will celebrate Homecoming Week November 7-13 with a host of activities, including, for the first time, a 5-K race across campus.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will celebrate Homecoming Week November 7-13 with a host of activities, including, for the first time, a 5-K race across campus. Other activities will include the annual hospital gurney derby, the parade and the homecoming game when the UAB Blazers take on the Houston Cougars at 3 p.m. Saturday, November 13, at Legion Field. The Homecoming events will include:



Sunday, November 7, 2004

5-K Classic: Run for Home — Start time for the race is 8 a.m. Runners will begin on 14th Street South next to the UAB Mini Park. Early registration is $15 for participants ages 15-adult and $10 for children ages 14 and under. Late registration the day of the race will be 7-7:45 a.m. and will be $25 for all ages. Registration forms are available in the Hill University Center, Office of Student Programs, Room 136, 1400 University Boulevard. Forms also can be sent via e-mail. Paint the Town Green and Gold — 2 p.m., Hill University Center, Concourse, 1400 University Blvd. UAB students and staff will decorate the campus and Southside.

Blazer Fight Song Competition — Noon, Hill University Center, Concourse, 1400 University Blvd. It’s not “American Idol.” In this contest, UAB students will compete by singing the UAB Blazer Fight Song. The contestant who sings with the most spirit wins.

Building Decoration Contest — Judging begins at 2 p.m. for the best decorated building.

Gurney Derby — Noon, Teams consisting of students and staff members, dressed in costume, will race hospital gurneys north on 13th Street South, to University Boulevard and back. The starting gate is in front of the Humanities Building, 900 13th Street South. (NOTE TO MEDIA: For best photos, arrive no later than 11:30 a.m. The derby lasts only about 10 minutes.)

Homecoming Parade — Noon, The parade will feature floats, clowns, the Blazer Marching Band and more. The parade will start at the corner of 15th Street South and 10th Avenue South. It will proceed east on 10th Avenue South to 18th Street South. It will then turn north onto 18th Street South. The parade will proceed along 18th Street South to University Boulevard. The parade will then turn east onto University Boulevard. It will continue down University Boulevard to 14th Street South. The parade will turn south onto 14th Street South where it will end.

Dragon March — 9:30 p.m., The Dragon March will begin in front of Bartow Arena at 617 13th Street South. The marchers will then proceed south onto 14th Street South to the UAB Mini Park at the corner of 14th Avenue South and University Boulevard. Join Blaze, the football players, cheerleaders, Golden Girls and the Blazer Marching Band as they march to the bonfire.

Pep Rally and Bonfire — Immediately following the Dragon March at the UAB Mini Park, corner of 14th Street South and University Boulevard.

Battle of the Bands — Immediately following the Pep Rally and Bonfire at the UAB Mini Park, corner of 14th Street South and University Boulevard. Bands compete for the top prize. The event is free and open to the public.

Homecoming Reunion Brunch and Campus Tour — 10 a.m., The brunch will be held in Bartow Arena, Green and Gold Room, 617 13th Street South. Immediately afterwards, guests will tour some of UAB’s newest buildings. Guests must R.S.V.P. by November 5 by calling the University Events office at (205) 975-0756 or sending an e-mail at uabevents@vpuadv.uab.edu.

Blazer Walk — 12:30 p.m., outside Legion Field, Gate 17; Be there as the cheerleaders, the Blazer Marching Band and fans cheer on the Blazers as they enter Legion Field to face the Cougars.

Blazer Village — 1 p.m., outside Legion Field, Gate 17; Blazer Village will feature prizes, balloons, face painting, games and more for the entire family.

Tailgate Parties — 1 p.m., the UAB Ambassador Alumni Chapter and the Physical Therapy Alumni Chapter will host tailgate parties at Legion Field. The schools of Arts and Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences will host a joint tailgate party beginning at 1:30 p.m. All parties will be held on the west side of Legion Field.

Homecoming Game — 3 p.m., Legion Field; The UAB Blazers will take on the Houston Cougars. During halftime, the new Mr. and Ms. UAB Scholarship winners and the Spirit Competition winners will be announced.

Peter Cincotti — 8 p.m., Alys Stephens Center, Jemison Concert Hall, 1200 10th Avenue South. The Alys Stephens Center presents pop/jazz pianist, vocalist Peter Cincotti; UAB alumni can buy one ticket and receive a second ticket for free. Call (205) 975-2787 for tickets.
