Dr. David G. Warnock, director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) division of nephrology, has been elected as president of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Dr. David G. Warnock, director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) division of nephrology, has been elected as president of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).

The NKF is a major voluntary health organization that seeks to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.

Warnock, who joined UAB in 1988 to lead its large program of kidney treatment, research and training, is professor of medicine and physiology. He has been involved with the NKF for more than a decade in leadership positions on the national and local levels.

His research interests focus on the link between high blood pressure and kidney disease. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigations and the American Association of Physicians.

Warnock is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where he received undergraduate and medical degrees. His postgraduate training was at the University of California Hospitals in San Francisco. He was research associate at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease before joining the UC-San Francisco faculty, where he rose to the position of professor of medicine and of pharmacology. He also was chief of nephrology at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Francisco.
