BIRMINGHAM, AL — Frank Messina, Ph.D., CPA, has been named chair of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Business effective August 15. He has been interim chair since August 1, 2002, when Lowell Broom, Ph.D., was promoted to associate dean of the school.

Messina, who joined the UAB accounting faculty in 1993, is the school’s Ernst & Young Scholar and an associate professor of accounting.

“Dr. Messina’s selection is based on a unanimous recommendation by the department’s search committee,” said Robert Holmes, Ph.D., dean of the UAB School of Business. “He has provided very energetic and thoughtful leadership of the department during the past year, and we know he will continue to do a superb job as department chair. I am delighted that he has agreed to accept this important leadership position and I know that the faculty are excited to have him as their chair.”

Holmes said Messina’s background in both accounting and information systems made him an ideal choice for chair. Messina earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of West Alabama and earned his master’s in professional accountancy and his doctor of business administration from Mississippi State University.

He has published more than 40 articles in prestigious journals, including CPA Journal, Journal of Taxation, Decision Sciences and Journal of Energy, Finance and Development. In addition, Messina is editor of The Cooperative Accountant and New Accountant High School Recruiting Journal.

He received the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence at UAB in 1999 and was a finalist for the Ingalls/UAB National Alumni Teaching Award in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2000.

“I am excited about the opportunity to continue in this significant leadership role within the UAB School of Business. I look forward to an ongoing close working relationship with Dean Holmes, the students, administration, faculty members and the professional community in maintaining the quality programs that we have,” Messina said. “I am extremely honored to have been selected and to serve my colleagues and UAB as chair.”
