BIRMINGHAM, AL — University of Missouri-Columbia psychologist Kristofer J. Hagglund, Ph.D., will be the first recipient of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Psychology’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Hagglund, who specializes in health policy, will be honored during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Friday, October 15, in Campbell Hall, Room 327, 1300 University Boulevard. During the ceremony, he will present his lecture, “Psychology, Health Policy and Politics: A Recipe for Tonic or Poison?” Call the Department of Psychology at (205) 934-3850 for more details.

“The $1.6 trillion U.S. health care system is receiving increased attention as the November elections approach,” said Hagglund, who is associate dean for health policy at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Health Professions. “The challenges facing the system include approximately 44 million people without health insurance, health disparities across race and ethnicity and poor access to care among people with chronic illnesses or disabilities. Psychologists and other social scientists have opportunities to address these problems through research, service and policy development.”

Hagglund earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in clinical medical psychology from UAB in 1987 and 1990 respectively. His academic career began in 1990 when he became an adjunct assistant professor of psychology in the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Arts and Sciences.

Today he is co-director of the university’s Center for Health Policy. He also is former director of research for the University of Missouri-Columbia’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Rusk Rehabilitation Center.

Hagglund’s distinguished career has been recognized by several awards, including the 1997 American Psychological Association James Garrett Early Career Achievement Award. He also received a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy fellowship for 2000-2001 from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies.

The UAB Department of Psychology’s Distinguished Alumni Award was created to recognize alumni of the department for their professional achievements, exceptional human qualities and contributions to the university and society, says Carl McFarland, Ph.D., who is chairman of the Department of Psychology.
