WHAT:

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) English Language and Culture Institute (ELCI) at the School of Education is offering three non-credit classes for people who are learning English as their second language. The classes are: Business English, Pronunciation and Accent Training and English for Daily Life. All classes will be taught by professional, English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors.

Business English — designed for those who already have a working knowledge of English; participants will receive instruction in business vocabulary and idioms. They also will learn the language skills needed for agreeing and disagreeing, conducting meetings and negotiations and making suggestions tactfully.

Class Time: 6:30-8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, September 13 - November 17, 2004

Cost: $395 plus textbook

Pronunciation and Accent Training — designed for those seeking to improve their American English accents; instruction will focus on words and phrases commonly used in business. The class will help participants identify pronunciation problems, practice challenging sounds and link words together for fluency.

Class Time: 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 14 - November 4, 2004

Cost: $325

English for Daily Life — designed for those who speak little English; participants will learn and practice English words and phrases for everyday use, including practicing with authentic materials and situations.

Session one: 10-11:30 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 7 - October 14, 2004

Cost: $270 for each session
