UAB will hold an open house and dedication ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new UAB Vaccine and T-Cell Translational Research Facility. The10,000-square-foot, $1.7 million facility encompasses the newly renovated Alabama Vaccine Research Clinic (AVRC), administrative offices and research labs. In addition to ongoing HIV and biodefense vaccine research, the new facility is designed to promote and support translational research — studies that hasten the transfer of laboratory research to therapeutic applications.

WHO:

 

Dr. William Koopman, chair of the Department of Medicine at UAB, will speak during the dedication ceremony. Dr. Mark Mulligan, UAB professor of medicine with the Division of Infectious Diseases, is the facility’s lead researcher. Other UAB faculty members with the facility are Dr. John Gnann, Dr. Paul Goepfert, and Dr. Scott Parker. In addition, about 25 staff members work at the facility.

IAVRC is currently conducting several HIV vaccine trials and a study of the FDA-approved anthrax vaccine, a national trial funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
