Larry Powell, Ph.D., has been named interim chairman of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Communication Studies.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Larry Powell, Ph.D., has been named interim chairman of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Communication Studies.

Professor Powell’s appointment becomes effective Monday, August 2. He will step in for Professor Mark L. Hickson III, Ph.D., who will return to teaching and research.

Powell’s research has focused on polling and political communication. He has published more than 60 journal articles, has authored and co-authored three books, and has been ranked as one of the top 100 communication researchers by the Association of Communication Administrators.

Powell earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Auburn University in 1970 and 1971 respectively. In 1975, he earned his doctorate from the University of Florida. Powell has been a member of the UAB faculty since 1998.
