Hutchings Presents Paper at Joyce Symposium

UAB Professor William Hutchings, Ph.D., was a presenter at the Bloomsday 100: The 19th International James Joyce Symposium held at the National College of Ireland in Dublin, June 12-19. More than 900 scholars and students attended the conference, which was designed to encourage scholarship, criticism and the study of the life, work and career of Joyce. Hutchings delivered his paper “The ‘Dubliners’ Overtures Or ‘[You] Could Interpret These Signs’: Teaching the Narrative/Rhetorical Strategies of Joyce’s First Sentences.” In his paper, Hutchings discussed his method for helping students understand the writing style of Joyce through an examination of the first sentence of his works. The subject was developed out of Hutchings’ teaching of Joyce at UAB. Hutchings is a professor in the School of Arts and Humanities’ Department of English.
