BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Alumni Association of the School of Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is accepting nominations for the Jo Ann Barnett Award for Compassionate Nursing Care. The award recognizes a UAB graduate and practicing nurse who exemplifies the best in nursing care.

The award was established in 2002 in memory of Barnett, a neonatal nurse practitioner in UAB Hospital’s regional newborn intensive care unit. Barnett earned her bachelor’s of science in nursing degree from the School of Nursing at UAB in 1987 and her master’s of science in nursing degree from the school in 1990.

Anyone may nominate an eligible candidate — a graduate earning his or her bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree from the School of Nursing at UAB or a graduate of a diploma nursing program of Jefferson, Hillman, Jefferson-Hillman or University hospitals. A committee appointed by the board of directors of the UAB School of Nursing Alumni Association will make the final selection.

The award will be presented at the school’s Reunion Reception and Awards Dinner on Thursday, November 4, at Vestavia Country Club. The deadline for nominations is September 10. To request a nomination form, or for more information, contact Carolyn Ross with the UAB School of Nursing Office of Alumni Relations at (205) 975-2443 or by e-mail at nursealum@uab.edu.
