Dr. T. Michael Harrington, chair of UAB’s Department of Family and Community Medicine, has been elected vice president of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama (MASA), a post he recently assumed.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Dr. T. Michael Harrington, chair of UAB’s Department of Family and Community Medicine, has been elected vice president of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama (MASA), a post he recently assumed. MASA is a professional association of about 6,800 physicians in all specialties throughout Alabama.

Harrington joined the UAB faculty as member of the department of family and community medicine in 1984 and was named chair of the department in 1991. As professor and chair of the department he directs and coordinates activities within the divisions of family medicine, predoctoral education and research. He holds a concurrent appointment as associate professor in UAB’s department of nutrition sciences in the School of Health Related Professions.

He also serves as assistant dean for off-campus family practice programs, working with the university’s Tuscaloosa, Huntsville and Selma programs, as well as with UAB primary care clinics and affiliate programs throughout the state. He is board certified in family practice and is a member of the medical staffs of UAB Hospital and Children’s Hospital.

Prior to joining the UAB faculty, he practiced at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Bremerton, Wash., where he was named Outstanding Educator, Primary Care Specialist. He also completed his residency there. While practicing at NRMC, he held a concurrent appointment clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He is also an honors graduate of University of Notre Dame, where he was selected Notre Dame Scholar.

In addition to this new appointment as vice president of MASA, Harrington has served in a variety of other leadership roles, including serving on the boards of the Alabama Academy of Family Physicians, John Carroll Catholic High School, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Notre Dame National Alumni Association.

He is a member of the Alabama Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Jefferson Academy of Family Physicians and the World Organization of Family Doctors. He has served on numerous committees in these organizations. Harrington is also a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Hoover.
