BIRMINGHAM, AL — UAB’s Erin Wright has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA). Wright, an associate professor of graphic design in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Art and Art History, won the grant based on his graphic design poster works.

Fellowship grants are the most prestigious grants awarded annually by the ASCA and are given to artists working in arts administration, crafts, dance, design, media/photography, music, literature, theatre and visual arts. The awards recognize artistic excellence and professional commitment and accomplishment. The recipient may use the grant money to set aside time to create art, improve their skills, or enhance their careers.

Wright’s work can be seen around the globe in coming months at shows that include the best poster designers in the world. His work recently was accepted for exhibition in a competition as part of the 19th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw, Poland, as well as the Mark X International Poster Invitational in Wuxi, Jiangsu, Republic of China. The “I Profess” poster exhibition at the [SCENE] METROSPACE in East Lansing, Michigan, which opens July 9, will feature poster works by Wright created in collaboration with Audra Buck, assistant professor of graphic design at UAB.

Wright’s work also has been submitted for consideration in the Eighth International Biennial of the Poster in Mexico to be held in Mexico City and for Golden Bee 6, the Moscow International Biennale of Graphic Design.

Wright earned his master’s of fine art degree with a concentration in graphic design and illustration at the University of Arizona and his bachelor’s degree in graphic design at Colorado State University. He has 20 years of experience as a designer and teacher, winning several local and regional awards for design. His work has appeared in nationally and internationally competitive design annuals and compendiums such as American Corporate Identity 19, published in New York, and New Logo World, published in Tokyo.

Wright recently was named associate chairman of the UAB Department of Art and Art History effective this fall, said Gary Chapman, chairman of the department.
