BIRMINGHAM, AL — Three schools at UAB are among the top 10 funded by the National Institutes of Health in their respective fields, and UAB is No. 20 for fiscal year 2003, according to figures recently released by the NIH.

The School of Health Related Professions was the top-funded school of its kind in the nation this past year. The School of Optometry ranked fourth, and the School of Public Health ranked 10th. The schools of Medicine and Nursing remained in the top 20 in their fields, at Nos. 16 and 17, respectively.

“UAB’s consistently high level of funding from the NIH demonstrates its national and international strength as a research organization,” said UAB President Carol Garrison. “The researchers at UAB continue to explore areas and find answers to questions that will impact the lives of everyone.”

Eight departments within the School of Medicine ranked in the top 10; Anatomy/Cell Biology was the top-funded department in the nation. Other departments in the top five are Surgery (2), Obstetrics/Gynecology (3) and Physical Medicine (4). Departmental rankings fluctuate more than school rankings because of large one-time grants, departmental reorganizations or funding reclassifications.
