BIRMINGHAM, AL —The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), with assistance from the Birmingham Museum of Art, will host the South Central Regional Conference of the Society for Photographic Education, October 9-12, on the UAB campus.
The conference, “Invention & Revival: Photography in the Digital Age,” will feature keynote speakers John Reuter, Julie Moos and Christopher Bucklow. The keynote lectures will be held at 7 p.m. nightly October 9, 10 and 11, in the Hill University Center Alumni Auditorium, 1400 University Boulevard. The Christopher Bucklow lecture is open to the public; all other events are open to registered conference attendees.

The conference will feature individual artists’ lectures, panel presentations, demonstrations, a silent auction and a vendors’ area. Demonstrations of the Van Dyke Brown and Cyanotype processes will be held as well as tour of the UAB digital print studio. Panel presentations will include effects of new technologies on the field of photography, revival of historical processes and the relevance of photography to civil rights issues.
As a special part of the conference, the UAB Visual Arts Gallery will feature a Polaroid 20 x 24 camera, in a working studio environment, October 9-16. The gallery will be open for observation each day during scheduled times. In addition, John Reuter, director of the Polaroid studio, will give a special demonstration on Saturday, October 11, 5-6 p.m. at the gallery, located at 900 13th Street South. in the UAB Arts & Humanities Building. The Birmingham Museum of Art is hosting a special reception and tour of several photography exhibitions for conference participants. The exhibitions include “Eye to I: Snapshots from Birmingham, Alabama circa 1960,” The Birmingham News Centennial Collection, recent acquisitions by David Levinthal, “Our Birmingham in Words” and photographs and an exhibition of works from a Birmingham Museum of Art outreach program.
