BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Art and Art History has added three new faculty members, said Gary Chapman, chairman of the department.
Audra Buck, a 2003 graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art with a master’s of fine art in graphic design, has been appointed as assistant professor of graphic design. Buck comes to UAB from Wayne State University, where she was an adjunct professor of graphic design. Previously, Buck was a news editor for the St. Petersburg Times weekend magazine. Buck’s work was exhibited in the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York, where she won the 2002 ICFF Editors Award. Buck also won an Award of Excellence from the Society for News Design in 1999 for a four-day series that ran in the St. Petersburg Times, “The Girl Whose Mother Lives in the Sky.”
Doug Baulos, a 1993 graduate of the University of New Orleans with a master’s of fine art, has been appointed instructor of drawing and 2-D design, as well as foundations coordinator. Baulos earned his bachelor’s of fine art with honors from UAB in 1990. Baulos’ work has been featured in several solo exhibitions, including “The Botanical Image” at Harashai Gallery in Tokyo, at galleries in New Orleans and at the UAB Visual Arts Gallery, Barehands Gallery, Space One Eleven and Lyda Rose Gallery in Birmingham. His work has been selected for group shows at the Magic City Art Connection and for galleries in Portland, Berkeley, Seattle, Toronto and Miami. Baulos was previously an adjunct professor of art at UAB since 1999.
Darren Crull, a 2003 graduate of Florida State University with a master’s of fine art in studio art, has been appointed an instructor of painting and drawing. Crull earned his bachelor’s of fine art in studio art from Lamar University. His work has been featured in exhibitions at Tallahassee Regional Airport and the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts, at Oglesby Gallery at FSU and at the 2002 and 2003 Florida Invitational, as well as “Spindletop 2001,” a group exhibition at Dishman Art Gallery at Lamar University.
The last two positions are one-year appointments with possible renewal, said Chapman.
