SILVER SPRING, MD — BrainBox Productions Inc., a Silver Spring based Production Company, explores incredible stories of traumatic injury in the new original series Vital Scan — premiering on October 10, 17 and 24, 2003 on the Discovery Channel. The human body is incredibly fragile yet astonishingly resilient. But sometimes it needs help from trained physicians or compassionate strangers. Jack Roush, Ben Young, and Travis Pastrana endured traumatic injury and intensive surgery. Each man came close to death but beat the odds and made a miraculous recovery. Their stories demonstrate the remarkable restorative powers our bodies possess and the strange turn of events that cause accidents and that help us survive them.

Racecar owner Jack Roush is a legend in the world of NASCAR. But on April 19, 2002 a freak plane accident left him drowning in the bottom of a lake and in desperate need of a miracle. Mark Martin, along with Larry and Donna Hicks, provide first hand accounts of the horrific crash and the remarkable events that followed. The show also features UAB surgeons Dr. Stephen Moran and Dr. John Kirkpatrick, who treated Roush during his recovery at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

The first episode of Vital Scan also features the stories of X-Games legend Travis Pastrana, whose spine was separated from his pelvis after landing short on a 120-foot jump, and a Maryland State Trooper’s horrifying and bizarre accident that left him fighting for his life. Each episode of Vital Scan unfolds with first hand accounts, dramatic recreations, archive footage and exciting 3D animation.

“Vital Scan is more than an interesting medical show. It is a powerful hour of human stories and amazing life experiences,” said series producer Travis Gray.

Episodes two and three of the series tell the stories of:

  • Mat Hoffman — another X-Game phenomena who lost his spleen, and almost his life, after a 46 foot freefall on his bicycle. Interview with Tony Hawk.

  • Trevor Snowden — former pro snowboarder turned paraplegic mountain bike madman — interview with USA Today's world greatest athlete Shaun Palmer.

  • Baltimore City Police Officer — gunned down during undercover drug bust — interview with Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley.

  • Rock climber — a miscommunication sent him plummeting nine stories off a rock face.

  • Skydiver Joan Murray — bank executive and skydiver hit the ground at nearly 80 mph.

  • Lindsay Thomas — 18 year-old woman trapped in her car for 5 days after falling asleep at the wheel.
