The School of Optometry at UAB will hold its doctoral convocation and hooding ceremony for graduating optometry school students honoring 38 graduates of the class of 2004, 28 of which have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The School of Optometry at UAB will hold its doctoral convocation and hooding ceremony for graduating optometry school students honoring 38 graduates of the class of 2004, 28 of which have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The rigorous four-year professional optometry degree program consists of two years of basic and health sciences, a third year of optometry-specific courses and a fourth year of clinical rotations. Optometry students see more than 2,500 patients over the course of their four years and get a chance to work in all six of the school’s specialty clinics.

This year’s speaker is Dr. William B. Deal, senior vice president for medicine and dean of the School of Medicine at UAB. Deal joined UAB in 1991 as associate dean and professor of medicine. He also served as senior associate dean prior to his appointment as dean in the fall of 1997. Deal served as interim director and CEO of the UAB Health System from December 1998 to October 1999.

Prior to moving to Birmingham, Deal was president of the Maine Medical Center Foundation and the Maine Medical Center in Portland. Previously, he served as associate vice president of clinical affairs and dean of the University of Florida College of Medicine spanning 11 years, and also had appointments with the American Medical Association and Northwestern University.
