Three academic advisors at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will bring home awards from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) annual conference to be held October 6 in Cincinnati.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Three academic advisors at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will bring home awards from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) annual conference to be held October 6 in Cincinnati.

Misty Altiparmak [cq], academic curriculum counselor in the UAB Division of General Studies, will receive the Outstanding New Advisor Award in the Primary Role category, which includes those individuals whose primary role at their institution is the direct delivery of advising services to students. Altiparmak is one of three academic advisors in this nationwide competition to be honored this year.

Sharon Jacobsen, academic curriculum counselor in the UAB Division of General Studies, has been awarded an Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit in the Primary Role category. Jacobsen is one of 15 academic advisors to be honored in the national competition.

Jeanne S. Hutchison, UAB assistant professor of mathematics, has been awarded an Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit in the Faculty Academic Advising category, which includes those individuals whose primary responsibility is teaching and who spend a portion of their time providing academic advising services to students. Hutchison is one of 12 faculty advisors to be honored in this year’s national competition.

NACADA has more than 7,200 members consisting of faculty, professional advisors, administrators, counselors and others in academic and student affairs concerned with the intellectual, personal and vocational needs of students. In addition, NACADA represents academic advisors and advising administrators and is an advocate for academic advising.
