BIRMINGHAM, AL — Jeffrey G. Gray, Ph.D., has been named an assistant professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Computer and Information Sciences in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Gray comes to UAB from Vanderbilt University where he earned his Ph.D. in computer science in May and was a research associate at the Institute for Software Integrated Systems (ISIS) at the university. While at ISIS, he worked on projects funded by Boeing Co. and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). He also was an intern at IBM’s TJ Watson Research Center.

“I am pleased to be joining the UAB faculty and am looking forward to working with the students,” Gray said. “Also, I welcome the chance to collaborate with the outstanding faculty UAB has on the many research opportunities on the horizon within computer science.”

“Jeff’s research and teaching experience are an asset to UAB,” said Warren T. Jones, Ph.D. chairman of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and a diverse background to the table that will help educate our students and will expand our research base in aspect-oriented programming.”

Gray earned his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in computer science from West Virginia University and was awarded the IEEE Computer Society’s International Award for Academic Excellence. He has been published in a number of refereed journals, including Communications of the ACM. He has presented his research findings at a number of conferences, including the IEEE Aerospace 2000 Conference.
