University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) education Professor Maryann Manning, Ed.D., has been named the first recipient of the 2002 Ellen Gregg Ingalls/UAB National Alumni Society Award for Lifetime Achievement in Teaching.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) education Professor Maryann Manning, Ed.D., has been named the first recipient of the 2002 Ellen Gregg Ingalls/UAB National Alumni Society Award for Lifetime Achievement in Teaching. She will be honored at the Alumni Leadership Recognition and Awards Luncheon noon Monday, September 30, at the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center, 1200 10th Avenue South.

The Ellen Gregg Ingalls/UAB National Alumni Society Award for Lifetime Achievement in Teaching recognizes full-time, regular faculty members who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to teaching throughout their career at UAB. The award will be presented annually and carries a $5,000 cash prize. Nominees must be past winners of the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Manning is being honored for her teaching and research in the areas of reading and writing education. She is the author and co-author of 15 books and more than 150 articles on reading and writing education and interdisciplinary teaching. She is also the reading and writing editor for Teaching K-8 magazine.

Manning has been chairman of the Young Authors’ Conference hosted by UAB for 17 years and of the Mid-South Reading and Writing Institute for 13 years. She also has been active with the Alabama Committee for the Southern Association Commission on Elementary and Middle Schools, the Alabama Reading Initiative and the Alabama Reading Association.

Manning received the Ingalls Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching in 1978 and the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1994. In 1999, she received a commendation from Gov. Don Siegelman for her service to education in Alabama.

Manning earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota in 1958, her master’s degree from Wayne State College in 1964 and her doctorate from the University of Nebraska in 1971. She has been a member of the UAB faculty since 1972.
