BIRMINGHAM Ala. – On March 20, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was presented with the Best New Youth Unit Award and the Youth Field Director’s Award during the 52nd NAACP Southeast Regional Conference held March 18-21 in Birmingham. More than 3,000 delegates representing more than 50 NAACP chapters from colleges and universities throughout the region participated in the conference.

The Best New Youth Unit Award is presented to a college chapter that has established an exemplary community program. The UAB chapter received the award for programs initiated in the 2003 fall semester, including their participation in the “Vote Yes” campaign for Gov. Riley’s tax reform package, an intercollegiate mayoral forum and a presidential program for former U.S. senator and ambassador to New Zealand Carol Moseley Braun. They also organized a gospel concert.

The Youth Field Director’s Award was presented to the UAB chapter to recognize its successful reactivation. The UAB chapter of the NAACP was originally founded in 1986 and then reactivated in the fall of 2003. It currently has more than 55 registered members. The group meets on the first and third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Mervyn H. Sterne Library, Henley Room, 917 13th St. S.
