The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will host a series of events and activities, April 11 - 16, designed to focus attention on the problem of violence against women.

WHAT:

 

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will host a series of events and activities, April 11 - 16, designed to focus attention on the problem of violence against women. To honor the victims of violence, students enrolled in the Women’s Studies course family conflict and violence, along with various members of the Birmingham community, will participate in the National Clothesline Project. The Clothesline Project is a visual display of student-decorated t-shirts decorated to represent a form of violence against women such as rape, incest or domestic abuse. The shirts will be hung on clotheslines Monday, April 12, through Friday, April 16, at the Education Building, first floor concourse, 901 13th St. S.; the Hill University Center, Concourse, 1400 University Blvd.; the Honors House, 1190 10th Ave. S.; and in the Ullman West Building, 1212 University Blvd.

April 11:

 

The film documentary “Domestic Violence,” 6 p.m. Sunday, April 11, Ullman West, Room 130, 1212 University Blvd. Admission is free to the public.

     

April 12:

 

“What’s Love Got To Do With It?” 7 p.m. Monday, April 12, Ullman West, Room 127, 1212 University Blvd. The film tells the story of entertainer Tina Turner and her struggles as a battered wife. Admission is free to the public.

     

April 13:

 

“Take Back the Night” march, 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 13; The march will begin at the 11th Avenue Park, on the corner of 17th Street South and 11th Avenue South. Marchers will head west on 11th Avenue South to 14th Street South. The marchers will then turn right onto 14th Street South and continue to University Boulevard. They will then cross University Boulevard to the Hill University Center, Concourse, 1400 University Blvd. The march will end at the Hill Center Concourse with a short presentation on domestic violence at 5 p.m. by Tomeka Robinson, Outreach Coordinator for the YWCA.

April 13:

 

Samford University political scientist Lisa Sharlach, Ph.D., will present a lecture titled “Wars Against Women” at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 13, in the Hill University Center, Great Hall, 1400 University Blvd. Admission is free to the public.

     

April 15:

 

“Women Poets for Victory Over Violence,” will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 15, at the UAB Spencer Honors House, 1190 10th Ave. S. The events will feature local poets. Admission is free to the public.

Sponsors for the event include the UAB Women’s Studies, the Women’s Center, the African-American Studies Program, the Honors Program, the Panhellenic Council, the Office of Student Life and the Interfraternity Council along with the Feminist Alliance, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the Family Violence Project and Rape Response.
