BIRMINGHAM, AL — Jeffrey Burkhardt, Ph.D., FHFMA, associate professor of health administration in the School of Health Related Professions at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham), has been selected to serve a two-year term as a delegate to the Healthcare Financial Management Association’s (HFMA) Annual US/UK Exchange. The Exchange brings HFMA colleagues in the United States and the United Kingdom together to examine developments in healthcare delivery and financial management.

The annual US/UK exchange provides an international forum for healthcare financial managers to compare trends occurring within their respective countries and offer guidance on how to transition through the challenges they face.

The 2004 Exchange will be held in New York in July. Burkhardt and 24 colleagues from the United States will host their UK counterparts in New York and at their home institutions for a week. In 2005, the UK delegates will host the Americans in Edinburgh, Scotland. Burkhardt is the only faculty member of a U.S university participating in the exchange. He will be paired with Mr. Paul Dillon-Robinson, managing director South Coast Audit, South Downs Health Trust, East Sussex, England.

“The Exchange is a week-long, in-depth exchange of experience, information and knowledge,” says Joseph Abel, Ph.D., director of professional development for HFMA. “Participation is both an honor and an opportunity to expand personal and professional understanding of healthcare finance.”

This year’s symposium is entitled Agenda for Change. Previous exchanges have been very successful and provided delegates with an opportunity to broaden their perspective on professional issues and develop innovative approaches to their professional responsibilities within their institutions.
